From Huffington Post: Bully: Has a Timeless Issue Found Its Moment?

Check out this article by Lee Hirsch who is a director, producer, cinematographer, and writer and was the director for the movie Bully.

Almost everyone has a story. That moment when we were bullied, or that entire school year, has stayed with us for a lifetime. Acutely memorable. Painfully timeless. Every year, the U.S. Dept. of Education estimates 13 million American kids are bullied. If you extrapolate that number, year after year, decade after decade, that means hundreds of millions of people.

I am often asked, is bullying getting worse? Or are we just talking about it more? There are no easy answers.

Teen Heavy Metal Fan Beaten in Britain, Called ‘Freak’ During Attack – Noisecreep

Bully Being Released Unrated

The Weinstein Company has announced that it will be releasing Bully unrated after an unsuccessful but aggressive effort to persuade the MPAA to reverse its initial ratings verdict (Nearly half a million people signed a petition from Katy Butler, Michigan high school student and former bullying victim, on Change.org to urge the MPAA to lower the rating).

Having the MPAA rate the movie as “R” wouldn’t get the movie out to those that needed it the most. Now that it’s unrated, it’s unclear if it will reach those as well. This change means it will be up to individual cinemas in the US to decide whether to show the film. Many times theater chains error on the side of caution and consider unrated films as if they have an NC-17 rating. AMC Theaters will be screening the film and has released this statement:

Guests younger than 17 can see the film if they are accompanied by a parent or adult guardian, or if they present a signed parental permission slip.

Not so sure they shouldn’t have just gone with the “R” rating. Your thoughts?

Light After Dark – Megan Landry

Previously we posted the video/song “Stronger” by Megan Landry that deals with bullying. This young talented singer/songwriter wrote a song last summer for a Entrepreneur Organization DIFD fundraiser event.

D.I.F.D. is a youth-driven program focused on raising awareness and inspiring conversations about youth mental health. Created by friends and family of Daron Richardson who lost her life to suicide at the young age of 14, D.I.F.D. is inspired by hope for a future where young people will reach out for help without fear or shame. D.I.F.D. supports programs and initiatives aimed at transforming youth mental health.

Here’s what Megan says on her youtube channel about this song. Ottawa was rocked when 14-year old Daron Richardson, daughter of a prominent community figure died by suicide. Just last month another prominent leader, a city politician, lost his son to suicide. Jamie Hubley was only 15-years old, my age.

Suicide is an awful thing. It’s choosing to never choose again. It’s not a life choice. This song is about making a life choice, and staying. The furthest thing you should ever let influence who you are … are bullies, or a bully. They are not worth your life!!
There’s ALWAYS light after dark.

Please take a listen to this song and share this!!

LIGHT AFTER DARK LYRICS:

VERSE ONE ;
Tear stained cheeks and broken hearts will never mend.
We can pretend though, black and white photo frames can’t contain the remains
But only the memories you see.
Chorus
I know you can be strong, This world is where you belong
When your life is on the chain, When belief starts to limp,
Just give it a cane, ignore the pain, because we all feel the same.
VERSE TWO ;
You just wanted to be understood in a world that never could
Nobody’s perfect you know, even when you can’t hit the notes
When you sink instead of float, you know.
Chorus
I know you can be strong, This world is where you belong
When your life is on the chain, When belief starts to limp,
Just give it a cane, ignore the pain, because we all feel the same.
Bridge ;
You are an original, unlike any individual
You are somebody’s spark, There is light after dark.
VERSE THREE ;
So glad that no damage was done, you had some hands to overcome
The dark moments, you don’t have to worry no more
You have the power to endure every unlocked door!
Chorus
I know you can be strong, This world is where you belong
When your life is on the chain, When belief starts to limp,
Just give it a cane, ignore the pain, because we all feel the same.
Chorus
I know you can be strong, This world is where you belong
When your life is on the chain, When belief starts to limp,
Just give it a cane, ignore the pain, because we all feel the same.
OUTRO Bridge ;
You’re somebody’s spark, there’s always light after dark.
